台鐵人員：「小心、小心！」

黑漆漆的車廂裡，只能靠著手電筒勉強辨識方向，這是台鐵302次自強號列車，出軌後的車廂內慘況，只見扭曲變形的車廂裡，到處都是碎玻璃。TVBS記者李佳欣：「這邊是直接撞上隧道壁的點，可以看到玻璃都散到旁邊座位，連這個整個火車的燈光，已經是掉下來了。」

天花板塌了，燈罩也跟著掉落，撞擊的剎那，隧道裡燈光全暗，乘客尖叫聲四起，當時的驚恐可以想像，這是直接受到撞擊的第5節車廂，往前走，第6節車廂不見了。TVBS記者李佳欣：「第6節車廂和第5節車廂，距離有30公尺之遠。」

兩節車廂遭到土石流撞擊，完全脫離，火車門框也嚴重變形，台鐵人員和趕來馳援的國軍，正在想辦法，把車廂給拖出隧道，這個近年來台鐵，最嚴重的脫軌意外，讓乘客飽受驚嚇，12個人輕傷，不幸中的大幸是，車廂沒有翻覆，也避免了更進一步的傷亡。
