【施旖婕／綜合外電報導】1994年南非舉行歷來第一次全民普選，黑人終於可以把自己手上的一票，決定國家的命運。為南非帶來全新一頁的曼德拉，一如所料高票當選總統，成為南非首位黑人總統。雖然過去受盡白人欺凌，但曼德拉強調「既不允許白人歧視黑人，也不允許黑人歧視白人」，堅持做到種族平等，致力讓各種族和解。

不過有許多國家的領導人，緊抓權力不放，但曼德拉恰恰相反，只做了一任總統，1999年便卸任，轉而投入慈善工作，致力發展兒童及治療愛滋病基金會的活動。
