土耳其伊斯坦堡市中心1日爆發數年來最激烈的反政府示威，警方對示威民眾發射催淚瓦斯和鎮暴水槍，導致數十位民眾受傷，並引發其他城市爆發抗議，土國主要盟友美國也譴責鎮壓行為。
示威原因起源於數天前，由於不滿政府計劃將伊斯坦市爾塔克西姆廣場附近的伊斯坦堡哲吉公園改建為購物中心，土耳其民眾開始和平抗議，但後來逐漸演變成反政府示威。
隨著警方1日下午從塔克西姆廣場撤退後，數千名土耳其民眾便進駐廣場，氣氛和平。然而，當民眾之後轉往接近總理辦公室的貝希克塔什區，警員使用催淚彈和高壓水龍阻止人群前進，一些示威人士則投擲石塊反擊。
這場反專制抗議引起國際關注，美國國務院表示，警方驅散抗議民眾時造成的傷者人數，引發美方關切，強調支持基本言論、集會自由和結社自由，才是保證土耳其長年穩定、安全和繁榮的最佳方式。
面對來自美國等方面的壓力，土耳其政府正試圖淡化動用大批警力鎮壓民眾抗議事件。土國政府態度軟化，總理艾爾段(Recep Tayyip Erdogan)表示，警方在處理抗議事件時有「過激反應」，「犯有一些錯誤」。
